Nov 26, 2010 · its possible the pump is bad, what brand is the pump? maybe try a well known, name brand pump Don't think it's the pump, original pump died in July, 2nd pump lasted 4 months, on 3rd pump and all 3 pumps have same symptoms. whines like there is no fluid (loud) but it's full, works for a while and then no power steering....not sure what brand.

You're power steering pump supplies pressurized fluid (just like any other power steering system) to the steering gear box to assist in movement of the wheels. The fluid then travels to a device called the hydro boost. This is located just below the brake fluid reservoir.

There is nowhere for extra fluid to go but to take up extra room in the reservoir itself. This is not a problem for the system per se. But keep in mind that power steering fluid expands as it is heated.
So according to this dealer the electronic power steering rack has fluid in it. they ordered a new rack and replaced it a couple days later when the rack came in. So I don't think their is any dealer repairable parts on the rack and if it fails or starts to leak the standard repair is to replace the entire rack assembly.
